Frequently asked questions

How does a soup subscription work?

Sign up for the Soup Share or join the waitlist. Sign ups open every 8 weeks. Once you’re registered, you can choose your pick up location, and pick up that week’s locally made soup every Tuesday.

Where and when can I pick up a subscription?

Your Soup Share is available for pick up every Tuesday. Choose the pick up location that’s best for you—

Carrboro: Pacifica
Durham: Brightleaf Square
Chapel Hill:

  • Southern Village
  • Lake Forest
  • Meadowmont

What happens if I’m out of town?

No problem! Just give us at least 5 days’ notice and we’ll either:

  • Hold your order and give you a double portion of soup and/or bread on a future date (that’s two quarts of the same soup, made fresh—not frozen leftovers from the week you missed). You’ll just need to tell us exactly which date you’d like your double portion—this doesn’t automatically happen the following week.
  • Gift your order to a friend.
  • Donate your order to the Durham Community Fridge, a network of 24/7/365 food pantries and community refrigerators in Durham.

I have a food allergy, can I still sign up?

Yes! All of our soups are vegetarian, and we’re happy to work with you if you have a food allergy. Let us know what it is, and we’ll do our best to accommodate. In some cases, this might mean skipping a week and giving you a double portion on another date. If that ever applies to you, we’ll always give you a heads-up first.

How do I find out what will be delivered each week?

We send out a weekly newsletter with that week’s soup and bread every Tuesday morning. Because our recipes depend on the fresh, seasonal produce, we don't share a 12-week menu in advance.

Can soups be frozen?

Yes, most of our soups are perfect for the freezer, but are always delivered fresh via the subscription.

What kind of containers do you use?

We use large pint-sized plastic containers and are Plastic Neutral through rePurpose Global, meaning we fund the recovery of as much plastic as we use.

How can my house become a pick-up location?

We are always looking for new pick-up locations to add to our delivery roster. If your home has a covered outdoor space (carport or front porch are ideal) and an outlet nearby for the refrigerator, let's talk! Folks hosting one of our mini fridges at their house get 50% off of subscriptions.

Is Short Winter Soups inspected?

We are inspected by the Orange County Health Department and have received a perfect score of 100 for the past 8 years.

What’s the “chef’s wild”?

It’s our weekly surprise add-on! Each week, you’ll get something different (usually in a 6oz container) to sprinkle on soup, slather on bread, or drizzle over a grain bowl. Just like our soups, every Chef’s Wild creation uses fresh, locally and regionally sourced ingredients, making it a delicious extra you won’t want to miss.
